Social media has been in an uproar about Oprah's new interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Meghan told her story on the racism she and her unborn baby faced from the royal family, which led to her struggle with mental health and eventually, flee from the UK with her family. Although I do sympathize with Meghan's experience, I cant help but feel frustrated about the amount of energy put toward this situation by the media.

The royal family is highly glamorized by the media, but that glamour doesn't negate the fact that this family and the system they perpetuate, has caused a history of racial violence and colonization. Meghan Markle chose to marry into an empire that embodies imperialism and classism, she is a light-skinned, wealthy woman who is married to a literal prince. She was able to easily leave her situation in order to have a healthier life, when so many Black people don't have that privilege. This is not to say that she doesn't deserve to tell her story, everyone deserves to speak on their experience, however, these people have such power and influence on the world that I wish larger conversations would take place in the media. Currently, there is a genocide happening in Tigray(region) of Ethiopia, anti-government protestors in Senegal are being murdered by police every day and yet, silence from the media.
